About Me
Real estate is my passion. No matter how hard I try to get away from it, it always calls me back. This passion was born from personal experiences and the disbelief that people would take advantage of you rather than educate you along the way.
Let me share some of the crazy stories that keep me on this path.
Our First Home
Our first home needed some TLC as we were purchasing with an FHA loan. When the appraisal came back, the bank required a new roof, bricks repointed, chimney fixed, wood rot repaired, etc. The owner refused to do the repairs, so our realtor told us it was up to us to fix it before closing. Trusting the advice, we put a lot of money into the house. When closing day came, we discovered the owner had an ex-wife he hadn't mentioned, and she didn’t want to sell! After months of back-and-forth, we finally closed at a higher price because the ex-wife saw the improvements we had made.
The Mortgage Nightmare
Fast forward a few years, and our mortgage payments doubled every year until we could no longer afford them. It turned out we were put into a reverse equity mortgage, which is now illegal in most states. Facing foreclosure, we contacted a realtor who told us our home was worth much less than we thought. She convinced us to accept a low offer the next day, that coincidentally was also her buyer. We ended up with $11.00 in proceeds at closing. Just two months later, she relisted and sold our home for double the price she had told us was the best we could get.
That was when I got my real estate license in New York State!
The Florida Fiasco
When we decided to relocate to Florida, we had an arrangement with a realtor. Upon arrival, we were met by his wife, who made several disparaging remarks about the homes she was showing us including telling us that she couldn't believe she was shlepping it showing properties in our price range. Despite the unprofessionalism, we found a house, placed an offer, and had it accepted. However, while on a layover back to New York, we got a call that the owners had changed their minds and wouldn't honor the contract. We had to fly back and find a more experienced realtor as time was running out for us as our home in NY had sold!
Yep....this is when I got my Florida real estate license! I worked for many years in Florida through the boom, the collapse and many hurricanes.
The Tennessee Trials
Twenty years later, we decided to relocate to Tennessee. We were looking for a specific type of property and found our dream home. The listing agent initially refused to show the property because we had kids, which is illegal. Eventually, with the help of a more experienced realtor, we saw the property and made an offer. The listing agent then claimed there were multiple offers, despite the house being on the market for four years. It is because of this broker who persisted as if she were buying this house herself, she is the reason that I decided to continue my real estate journey here with Weathersbee Realty!
If you've made it this far through my story, I appreciate your time and interest. These experiences are what keep me passionate about real estate. I am dedicated to ensuring my clients are well-informed and treated fairly throughout their real estate journey. Buying a home is a major decision and a significant investment and should never be treated as just another transaction by your realtor.
